Tangentyere Council was formed in 1974 to help Aboriginal people camping around Alice Springs get land and basic services. The Council now provides services, including housing, financial advice, training, employment, aged care and landcare, to the Aboriginal town leases.

The Landcare and Environmental Health Unit also supports remote area communities. It started as a nursery in 1984, and since the 1990s has developed strong, community-based education programs. These include a two-way program for young people, aimed at supporting the passing on of traditional ecological knowledge and the teaching of 'western' land management ideas and practice.

With continued NHT (Natural Heritage Trust) support, the Land & Learning program expanded in 2001 with the employment of two biologists, who worked with remote community schools at Nyirrpi, Papunya and M'Bunghara. These biologists did field activities with school children and community elders, producing outstanding resources on local plants, animals and water places. The work has continued in 2002 and 2003, with Land & Learning working at schools in Mutitjulu, Titjikala, Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa), Areyonga and Yuendumu communities, and Yarrenty-Arltere Learning Centre. During 2003 Land & Learning was given a year's funding from FACS (Australian Government Family and Community Services) to develop the educational aspect of our resources and evaluate the program.

This year (2004) we have been successful in applying for new NHT funding, so plan to continue working with schools at Ltyentye Apurte and Areyonga, Yarrenty-Arltere Learning Centre, and start working with Willowra school. We also hope to involve some community schools in the NT Parks and Wildlife Junior Ranger program.
