Woolianna School

Welcome to our School!

Woolianna School is part of the Top End Group School (TEGS). The school is located on a site owned by the Woolianna Community Development Association. Woolianna School was opened in 1998 and is set on 10 hectares of undeveloped scrub land. The school is situated on Woolianna Road and is 10 kilometres from the Daly River Community.

The school and community hall are sited on an excavated site cut out of a hillside. The school consists of 3 demountables which are used as classrooms, a library and canteen. The school, in conjunction with the Red Cross, has introduced the ‘Good Start Breakfast Club®’. Every morning our students are provided with a breakfast which includes cereal, toast and juice before they start formal class activities.


LC2 (Grades 2-5) classroom

Woolianna School currently enrols students from Transition to Year 9 (4 ½ - 15 years). At the end of the 2007 school year we had 42 students enrolled. Our students are predominantly indigenous, and attend the school from the local Woolianna area as well as from the Nauiyu Community. Our students are picked up daily from the community and surrounding area by the school bus.

Woolianna is located approximately 230kms South West of Darwin on the Daly River. It is 10 kms from Nauiyu Community.

Information on Daly River
The Nauiya Nambiyu (Daly River) community has a population of around 300 and is located 110 kilometres west off the Stuart Highway. Prior to European settlement, the Daly River was traditionally a meeting place for Aboriginal people to trade and hold ceremonies. Today it is a popular fishing and camping area renowned for its plentiful supply of barramundi. Today the community is situated on the banks of the river. The community has a:

  • Health clinic
  • Local shop with fuel bowsers
  • Pub
  • Workshop
  • Child Care Centre
  • Police Station
  • Merrepen Fine Arts Gallery

The Merrepen Fine Art Gallery holds an Aboriginal arts and cultural festival every May or June. The festival includes art sales and an auction, traditional music and dance, bush tucker displays, and a sporting carnival. The Daly River itself is a picturesque tidal river, home to both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles, and a plentiful source of barramundi. Bamboo Creek and Horseshoe Billabong are gorgeous spots to picnic and enjoy the company of rare birds and wallabies. During the wet season temperatures range from 25°c at night to 32 °c during the day. Temperatures in the dry season are relatively warm. With an average daily temperature of 30 °c which falls to 20 °c at night.
