The Adventures of Munburri!

During her travels, Munburri’s mission was to convey a message of friendship and cooperation to other students around the Territory and to collect information about their school, its students and their communities. Through her website, Munburri began building a profile of life around the Territory to share with the students of Warruwi and the other students of the online community.

STUDENT OUTCOMES:

The students of Warruwi live a very insular life. Through their website, they are able to read diary entries from children in other parts of the Territory. Some students in the school have never left the island, so for them this was quite a special experience. Also, many of the families of this community have strong ties with some of the communities visited and this stimulated the interest of some parents as they looked at the photos uploaded with the diary entries.

Their website has also provided students with the opportunity to upload their work onto the web with ease. Seeing their work on the computer screen beside that of other students gives them a great deal of pride. It may be as simple as the patterns made with blocks and photographed or some of their writing and drawings.

Other outcomes from the project include learning to use ICT to regularly scan or photograph their work, as well as to access entries and information about the schools and areas in which Munburri was travelling.

Students also accessed the Internet to gain information about turtles. Sea Turtles are a major part of the diet for the people of this community, and it is important for them to understand more about them.

Many students who had been reluctant school attenders, are now the first people in the door and eager to “use the computers please”, A cry which has become the first thing the teachers hear every morning.
