Rationale
School Sport NT operates thanks to numerous people volunteering their
time: teachers, office-based staff, school assistants and people from
outside the system; i.e. sports personnel, parents, and friends. School
Sport NT is most grateful for the assistance of these people but feels
that without ready access to the School Sport NT Handbooks, and/or
experience, some guidelines as to procedures/attitudes must be provided.
The
Ethos of School Sport
The aims of a team, team officials and an Exchange/Championship
vary. Exchanges are different from Championships. Intra-Territory
teams can and should have slightly different aims from those traveling
Interstate.
In
all School Sport NT Events the concept of a Fair Go for all is important.
It is considered vital that children have reasonable equality in
terms of playing time. Coaches/Managers should avoid over-playing
dominant players to the detriment of others.
Coaches
/ Managers should also be aware of the importance of praising all
performances, setting relevant team goals and avoiding unnecessarily
large scores in any sport. Teams come to participate and learn,
not to return home demoralized.
Procedures
The following reminders/tips for organising teams/trials/training
should be read in conjunction with the School Sport NT Handbooks.
If one is not available, Cluster
coordinators or School
Sport NT should be contacted for advice.
Pre-Exchange
/ Championship
Liaise
with the local School or Cluster co-coordinator and Event Convenor
re: team selection, travel, and event organization. This is vital
as it enables you to know what is going on and who to talk to.
Dispatch
notes to all schools re: competitions, trials, and training. Make
sure you have several training sessions. Some students may not
be able to attend a "one off". Prior notice is also
important.
Follow
up on schools with no-one attending. Check they received and distributed
notes.
Select
appropriate times and venues.
Have
equipment / water available.
Praise
all efforts and are seen to be fair in your team selection.
Have
an initial note with basic information and costs so students can
make decisions on participation.
Select
and announce a team (and reserves). Doing this with everyone in
attendance is better than relying on faxes/notes
Have
appropriate forms and notes (i.e. Movement Requisitions, School
Sport NT Permission Form), arrange for uniforms, payments, etc.
Consult Cluster Co-coordinator to organize banking of levies.
Organize
an appropriate training schedule.
At
the Exchange / Championship
Duty of Care: All team officials are obliged to remain at the
venue with their team unless there are exceptional circumstances,
which must be discussed with the Convenor. At all events, officials
must remain with team members until they leave or are dismissed.
Be
fair and display appropriate sporting conduct. Respect umpires
/ officials at all times. In both cases team officials are models
for their teams.
Give
all children the opportunity to do well.
Discuss
any Billeting problem with Convenor or Billeting Officer before
taking action.
Safety
At all training/meeting/events the safety of team members is paramount.
If
you have questions about Duty of Care, ask for advice.
Post
Exchange / Championship
Return
all equipment / uniforms.
Finalise
financial statements.
Write
report for appropriate body.
Have
a good Time!
School Sport NT conducts all events in both alcohol and smoke free
environments.
