Why online?

What is online learning and what does it mean for my students?

Online learning enables teachers to offer flexible online learning delivery packages aligned to curriculum outcomes that extend learning possibilities and broaden teaching and learning options.
Teachers can use a variety of tools, including online learning and digital content to create and expand learning opportunities.
Students can utilise digital content through online learning using ICT to expand and deepen their learning. This can be facilitated at a pace, in a place and with an educational purpose that suits them.

In its broadest definition, online learning refers to the use of information and communications technology (ICT) to access and share information; to create and share resources; to problem solve; and to communicate and interact locally and globally.

In an online world, students engage in

  • exploring and experimenting
  • thinking and working creatively
  • informed decision making
  • reflecting and planning
  • communication with others
  • working interactively and collaboratively

Online learning motivates and engages students, helps to personalise learning and establishes learning communities. Online learning provides opportunities for students to participate in authentic, purposeful learning, often with real world relevance and feedback.
