The
Katherine Group School (KGS) consists of 12 schools situated in remote locations
in the Rivers Cluster (formerly the Katherine Region). The KGS has a centralised
administration and teaching staff, plus a Teaching Principal for each of
the 12 schools. Whilst KGS is one school with centralised leadership a level
of autonomy and independence is still maintained at the local campus level.

PROGRAMS
The Katherine Group School has a number of programs which are co-ordinated
across its campuses. These include the Base-line Data program which assesses
achievement levels in Literacy and Numeracy, ESL, ESL for ILSS, and a
Mobile Preschool program. Under review is the co-ordination of the provision
of secondary education.
KGS also has a website under development, which
houses relevant data on each of the 12 campus schools, plus various student
activities and a database of professional development activities attended
by teachers.
OPPORTUNITIES
Katherine Group School offers great opportunities for both neophytes and
experienced teachers. A strong, professional network amongst schools has
developed under the group school concept over the last three years. Factors
of isolation and remoteness have been overcome by weekly visits from Group
School Advisory Staff who offer both professional and social support.
The strong team focus has also been instrumental in the raising of academic
expectations of all students in the Group School arrangement.
Coupled with these features, all Group Schools are situated in fantastic
locations which are rich in history and traditional indigenous culture.
From Amanbidji in the West, influenced by the Durack Family to Urapunga
in the East, based on the banks of Roper Bar, KGS schools have much to
offer young and old alike. From Timber Creek on the Victoria River with
the Big Horse Fishing Classic to the Mataranka Rodeo and North to gold
panning in Pine Creek, much can be learnt and experienced. Beswick Falls
and the Jarraluk Corroboree dancers provide a traditional leap in time,
as do the basket weaving and craft making of the Bulman people. KGS is
a jewel of the Rivers Cluster.
