The famous words of Bruce Gyngell as he began the first broadcast on the official opening of television in Australia at 6.30pm on September 16, 1956. Television had finally come to Australia just in time for the Melbourne Olympic Games.

But it was a long time before television, or TV as we know it now, became common in the homes of Australians.
