Hello!

My name is Eddie. I am a frilled-neck lizard from the top end of the Northern Territory in Australia. This is my friend Spike. Spike is a thorny devil and he comes from the centre of Australia, the bottom half of the Northern Territory. We both live in the Internet. Spike and I help teachers and students learn about the Internet and how to research using the EdNA Online website.

We would like to start a brand new adventure. We want to travel around the Northern Territory to meet interesting people and see new places!

We plan to meet as many friends as possible. Would you help us?

How do we join?

All you need to do is:

  1. Go to our website at http://www.schools.nt.edu.au/olsu/edna/virtualtour.
  2. Click on How to Join.
  3. Print the permission forms for your parents/teachers. Have your permission notes filled in and give to your teacher.
  4. Click on guestbook
  5. Fill in your information
  6. You are ready to begin!

What do we do next?

  1. Click on 'Pictures to download' and print the picture of me! Draw hats, shoes and any other items I may need to live in your community! Colour me in!
My T-shirt is blank. Design my T-shirt to promote your community.

  2. Get together with your class friends and plan/brainstorm an imaginary day where we travel around your community with you. It can be a school day, a special holiday or even a weekend!

  3. Plan and draft your story. Write your story (preferably write and save on a computer - otherwise handwritten is fine.) Your story can be individual or a group effort.

  4. Send me any photos. Spike and I will place ourselves into the picture once we have your Photos. It will look like we were actually there!
This is me with my two friends at Wagaman Primary!

  5. Send me your story. You can email it, fax it, mail it or send it to me on a disk. Your story and photos will be put on my website and we will build up a journal of my adventures in the Northern Territory.

  6. Send me your finished pictures of me! I will put them on my website!

How should we write our story?

Write your story as though you are Eddie (me) or Spike. Here is an example.

Today I arrived at the Katherine Gorge The tourist buses were arriving. Two young students jumped off a bus and ran up to me.
"Hello. I'm Sarah. This is my friend Sally. My class is from Katherine Primary School in Katherine. Would you like to join my class on the tour?" Sarah asked.
"I would love to", I said.

The class invited me on their boat. "Hop in Eddie", said Sarah, "Our teacher, Miss Brown, will show us the historical sights". The gorge was huge! Miss Brown told us how it was formed.

What can we include in our story?

You could write about:
  • your class friends (just their first names - nothing private), teachers and school.
  • the history of your community
  • a local event or special day
  • a local historical or tourist site
  • where to have breakfast, lunch or dinner
  • introduction to interesting people in the community
  • what it is like to live in your community
  • nature features
  • local food and customs
  • the weather

What else can we do?

Draw a map of your community. If you have a drawing program like ClarisWorks, design your map on your computer!

Introduce Spike and Eddie to a local native animal. Tell them all about their new friend!

Tell Spike and Eddie about your weather patterns throughout the year.

Take Spike and Eddie to your favourite sport events. Explain why it is popular in your community, who is playing and explain the rules! Take photos so Spike and Eddie can 'appear' in the crowd or even participate!

Keep a budget of how much money you need to take Spike and Eddie around your community for the day. Start with the cost of food, transport, tickets to events, items of clothing and sunscreen!

Can anyone join?

If you are a student in the Northern Territory You can do this activity from school or home.

If you appear in any photos, you must make sure your parents have signed the photo section on the permission form.

If you are not a resident of the Northern Territory, Spike and I can not visit at the moment. However, if you sign the guestbook, we may be able to visit you in the future.

When do we send the stories?

As soon as possible! I will have my website showing my journey around the Northern Territory by the end of Term 4. All the T-shirts will be shown on the Internet and the winner will be announced.
