Instrumental Lessons & Nakara School Band

Instrumental lessons are available to students in Years 6, 5 and 4 on a range of musical instruments. NT Music School tutors provide these lessons once a week during school time. Students who have been learning an instrument for more than a year are then invited to become a member of the Nakara School Band which performs together at a number of occasions throughout the year.

Recorder in Class

Year 3 and 4 students undertake weekly lessons on the recorder as part of their music curriculum, which enables them to develop skills in reading and performing music. These skills can be applied to learning other instruments and have been proven through research to significantly benefit students in all areas of life learning.

Musica Viva in Schools

Nakara is involved in the Australian Musica Viva in Schools program each year. As part of this program students learn to play, adapt and enjoy a range of pieces by a touring educational performance group. The program challenges students to explore music of different cultures and styles, and concludes with an in school performance by the touring group.

Recorder Group

A Recorder Group is available to students who have been learning recorder for a year and wish to extend their music learning in a fun, challenging and collaborative environment. Students in the Recorder Group perform at school assemblies and concerts both within and outside of school.

School Choirs

Students in grades 3-6 are also invited to take part in one of Nakara's school choirs. The choirs rehearse during school time each week and learn a variety of pieces from fun and nonsense songs to meaningful and challenging pieces. Participating in the choir requires commitment in order to achieve long term performance goals. The Senior Choir participates annually in the Beat Foundation Production held in September at the Darwin Entertainment Centre as a part of the Combined Schools Choir. This year the Junior Choir formed the chorus for the school's musical production of 'The Circus'. Both choirs also perform throughout the year at various assemblies and concerts.
