INNOVATIVE ERICUS PROJECT APPROVED FOR MILLNER IN 2008

NATIONAL AWARD FOR MILLNER PS

At the national award ceremony in Canberra, two teachers and two students from Millner Primary School were presented with the $10,000 First Prize & $2,500 Second Prize (for the state) in 2007 Healthy Active National Schools Competition. The presentation was made by the then Prime Minister Mr John Howard, the Federal Minister Mr Abbott and the Member for the NT, Mr Tolmer.

These awards recognise our high impact program called 'Good Eating' that successfully promotes a whole of school approach to improving the wellbeing of our students and community.

Recognising the importance of providing an appropriate pedagogy for Indigenous students, Millner PS has developed the highly innovative ERICUS project. ERICUS stands for Educating Remote Indigenous Children in Urban Settings. The project aims are:

We will be successful when we put together and/or demonstrate…

A model of classroom practise that most appropriately meets the needs of 'urban remote' Indigenous children.

A model for 'flow-through' education from community playgroup to pre-school to school.

Changes to current policy at the system level in order to recognise and better meet the needs of 'urban remote' children.

A model of achieving well-being through 'Fit for Learning'.

A model for working with other agencies.

A model for improving attendance by "following up".

A model for involving parents in improving attendance.
