Edward de Bono, inventor of the Six Thinking Hats, sees the problem with decision making as muddled thinking. The thinker is not equipped to deal with a wide range of information and perspectives at once thus becoming unfocused. By separating and focusing parts of the problem the thinker will be able to make clear choices.

To help separate information and perspectives de Bono created a tool called the Six Thinking Hats with each hat being a different colour.

  • White Hat - seeking information
  • Blue Hat - for planning, monitory and thinking about thinking
  • Yellow Hat - looking for the advantages
  • Black Hat - looking for the disadvantages
  • Green Hat - being creative, generating alternative ideas or solutions
  • Red Hat - expressing feelings
