Pine
Creek's History
Pine
Creek is an area rich in mineral resources. At present there is an operational
mine close to town, operated by Anglo Gold, a company that actively supports
the school, and promotes the school when recruiting new employees. During
2002 mine management talked of scaling down its operation leading to the
proposed cessation of mining activity at Union Reef in 2003. This has
not affected the school community to date, and is unlikely to impact on
our student numbers or staff in the first semester of 2003. Mine management
has not made any further indications to the school or community regarding
the timing of the mine closure.
There is
a stable community of residents living in the township and at Kybrook,
these families have young children who are likely to attend Pine Creek
School in the coming years. There are some medium-term residents who come
to Pine Creek to work for periods of between one and three years. We also
have a semi itinerant population who come and go between Pine Creek, Jabiru,
and Borroloola and to a lesser extent Elliott.
