Location
& Climate
Minyerri is
located approximately 270 km south-east of Katherine by road. A permit
is required for non-Aboriginal people to enter the community. The Hodgson
River is in close proximity. The area experiences the Wet and Dry seasons,
with temperatures ranging from Dry season overnight lows of 10º through
to daytime highs of 40º in the buildup. The annual rainfall is 800-1000
mm.

Communication
& Travel
Minyerri has clear TV reception via ABC, Imparja, SBS and Seven. Access
to Minyerri from Katherine is initially along the Stuart Highway to the
Roper Highway turnoff just beyond Mataranka. Once on the Roper Highway
you travel for approximately 117 km until reaching the Roper Valley/Hodgson
Downs turnoff. This is an access road. The distance to Minyerri is then
approximately 43 km. This road is often impassable during the Wet season.

Teachers are housed in modern, air-conditioned dwellings.

Community
Minyerri is an Aboriginal community with a population of approximately
500 people. The community has an on-going CDEP program. There are two
resident nursing sisters and two Aboriginal Health worker. A doctor visits
fortnightly and dental care services are provided each month. Minyerri
has a weekly freight and mail flight each Tuesday. There are two community
stores with a limited range of goods. Alcohol is not permitted, and Police
Officers from Mataranka provide a patrol service.

Special
Features/Programs
Minyerri School has an enrolment of approximately 160 students, with approximately
90% attendance, from Preschool to Senior Secondary. The school is staffed
by an ET3 Principal, an ET2 teacher, seven Band 1 teachers, three full-time
Assistant Teachers, one 0.5 Assistant Teacher, seven ATAS tutors, a 0.5
janitor and two 0.5 cleaners. There is a School Council and an ASSPA committee.
Earlier in 2003 the school opened four new classrooms to cater for increased
enrolment.

Attractions
in the area
An interesting feature is that Hodgson Downs station on which the school
is situated is a working cattle station. A picturesque billabong is nearby.

Specific
Allowances
Minyerri School is classified as a Category 3 School. The following are
conditions of employment for any teaching staff living at Minyerri.
+ 100% Rental
Concession
+ 5 study leave points for each completed year of service in this locality.
20 points must be accumulated in order to receive 6 months study leave,
which is subject to CEO approval.
+ Fares Out of Isolated Localities (FOILS). 3 FOILS Fares per year to
Darwin ie. Km Allowance + 2 Nights Accommodation.
+ Freight on food stuffs. Reimbursement to cover freight on food limited
to a maximum of 12kg per week for an employee without dependants, 23kg
per week to an employee with one dependant and 31kg per week to an employee
with more than one dependant.
+ Family Travel Assistance Program
+ Household Contents Insurance Premiums
+ Professional Isolation Allowance $1429.00 per year
+ Business Days: 4 days leave per school year on Group School Principal's
