Mataranka Primary School opened in 1968, in the heart of Never Never country. It serves a community made up of pastoral, tourism, mining, Parks and Wildlife and supporting service industries. There is a Health Clinic, Police Station, Council Offices and a Community Library.

The school is a focal point in the community. It has a roll between the mid to high twenties. It has two classrooms. The Junior Room caters for Transition to Year 2 while the Senior Room is for Year 3 to 7. There is an after school Homework group each day supported by ASSPA.

It is set in beautiful, well shaded grounds with a large oval, tennis court (with basetball and netball hoops and markings) and a large playground area. There is a covered area used for lunch, assemblies, functions and wet weather activities. Both rooms have computers with a large selection of interactive software. The Senior room is connected to th internet. There is a scanner, digital camera and video camera.
