Mataranka Primary School opened in 1968, in the heart of Never Never country. It serves a community made up of pastoral, tourism, mining, Parks and Wildlife and supporting service industries. There is a Health Clinic, Police Station, Council Offices and a Community Library.
Mataranka is situated 106 km south-east of Katherine, on the Stuart Highway. It is a popular tourist destination with the famous Mataranka Thermal springs nearby. Other attractions are the Elsey National Park, Mataranka Falls, and the Waterhouse and Roper Rivers.
