TERM
2 - FELIKS PRESENTATION & COMMUNITY BBQ
Members of the Katherine Office Region of Small Schools hosted an evening
for Community members to introduce the FELIKS concept - fostering English
Language in Katherine Schools. The speakers identified in both Standard
Australian English and Kriol, that Kriol and English are two separate
languages with separate understandings, beliefs and world views. The students
first learn and speak Kriol at home and are taught and practice Standard
Australian English at school. They must learn to switch between Kriol
and English as the need arises, depending on the situation, giving them
more choices in their lives and future careers. The presentation was followed
by a sausage sizzle that was enjoyed by all.

TERM
2 SCHOOL REPORT & VIDEO EVENING
Parents attended the School for a Report/Video evening late June 2003.
They attended a short interview with the Teaching-Principal to recieve
their child's Term 2 report and then were able to watch a video presentation
of the students' recent excursion to Kununurra, Western Australia, where
they visited three art galleries, viewed local Indigenous artworks and
met artists. They were introduced to ochre painting by a local Indigenous
artist who had walked the lands of Amanbidji many years before. The students
copied a work that mapped the land, rivers and areas of importance nearest
to the Community.
