Henbury Happenings

Welcome to our Term 2 edition of Henbury Happenings.  I hope your term has been successful and as enjoyable as mine.  After a rocky term one and a shaky two weeks of second term we have really settled into the year with some good structures, routines and quality teaching and learning.

I want to, as always, acknowledge the great work of our classroom Teachers and SESO’s.  There’s is the real work in our school and the most aspect of your student’s learning.

2007 has been the first year in which our school has had two distinct Sub-Schools; The Middle Years and The Senior Years. They have begun well and we look forward to consolidating them as distinct entities that are able to focus on the differing and distinct needs of our students.   I am grateful for the leadership and support Paul Drewitt and Jane Allan are supplying to these two areas of our school.

We also look forward to preparing for the year sevens as part of our Middle Years in 2008.  Transition for this will begin early in term 3.

This year we have experienced a growth in the connections with our fellow Special Schools with Nemarluk and Acacia Hill in Alice Springs working increasingly closer together.   Next Semester we will join a Professional Learning Community which will see cross-school visits and a sharing of good practices between the 3 Special Schools.

Some further good news includes the announcement of $250 000 for facility upgrades at Henbury School and the allocation of funding for a new bus for Buslink.  We are confident this will enhance the very important service they provide to families.

We end the semester with a number of farewells.
Carmel after many years of leadership at  Henbury School has won a promotion as a Special Education Advisory Teacher at Student Services Division – Well done Carmel.
Garry Gray has been with us for 12 Months and leaves for a sea-change – we wish you well and hope that you keep in touch.
Rob Williamson leaves after a Semester keeping our ICT services clicking along.
Poppy is leaving us once again on Maternity Leave to spend quality time at home with her family preparing for baby number 3.   We will miss all of these staff,  I would like to thank them for giving  generously to the students of Henbury.

Don’t forget Day 1 next term is a Student Free Day (Monday 23 July).  I would like to leave you with this picture of yours truly contributing a small piece to the beautiful creation currently being led by one of our families Graham and Jenny Waters.
