Johnston - Blue
Named after Commodore Eric Johnston.
Commodore Eric Johnston was born in Shanghai, China, 29 July 1933. He was
the Northern Territory Administrator from 1981 to 1989. He died in Darwin,
26 February 1997, aged 63. During the clean-up after Cyclone Tracy, he
assisted with the coordination of accommodation, food provisions and
emergency naval assistance. For this he received the Military OBE and Order
of Australia.


History of Driver Primary School

Driver has 4 house teams.The four houses at Driver have been named after Administrators that have
helped to shape the Northern Territory and its people. We honour these
people and their contribution to our Territory.


Sport at Driver



Archer - Green
Named after James Archer.
James Archer was born on the 28 July 1900. He was first appointed to the
Public Service in 1916. He served in New Guinea during the Second World
War. In 1956 he was appointed Administrator of the Northern Territory and
served in this office until 1961 and during this time he was responsible
for the first Administrator’s Council in moves towards self-government. He
died in Canberra in 1980.

Chaney - Yellow


Named after Fred Chaney

Fred Chaney was born in Perth in 1941. He has held various positions in
the Federal Government but the most noted and controversial was the term of
office in the Aboriginal Legal Service during the early 70’s.



In 1985 Driver Primary School operated from Berrimah Primary School for one term whilst awaiting the building of the new premises located in Driver.
Driver Primary School was the second Primary school to open in Palmerston.
The present school site was officially opened on 10 September 1986 by the Honourable Daryl Manzie MLA Minister for Education.
Driver Primary School now boasts an enrolment of 486 students, which includes students who attend the preschool attached to the main school.


Nelson- White


Named after John Nelson

Mr John Nelson was the Administrator from 1973 to 1975 and was in office at
the time of the appointment of the first fully-elected Legislative Assembly
in 1974. During the Second World War, he served in the Australian Imperial
Forces. He retired from parliament in 1966 and died in 1991.
