Darwin is closer to Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Port Moresby than to
many Australian capitals in the south.
There are regular air links with many Asian cities on Royal Brunei, Malaysia,
Qantas and Merpati Airlines.
Our tropical climate is similar to many parts of East Asia.
A wide variety of visual arts, theatre, dance, music, museums and art galleries
is available. Our performing arts centres and open air theatres host both local
and international artists.
Light summer clothing is usually worn. Sun screen and sun hats are essential.
However, there are a few cool days and nights in April and May.
An outdoor lifestyle is enjoyed all year round because of Darwin's tropical climate.
Activities include badminton, squash, fishing, canoeing, swimming, hiking and
sailing. The international standard Marrara Sports Complex hosts the Arafura Sports
Festival where thousands of athletes from south East Asia, Papua New Guinea, the
Philippines and Hong Kong compete.
There are many exotic restaurants and open air markets selling international foods
including Indonesia, Chinese, Malaysian, (also Halal), Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai,
Greek, Indian, Sri Lankan and European.
There are eight main shopping centres in Darwin. All are readily accessible by
bus or car.
The landscape, flora and fauna of the Northern Territory are exciting and unique.
Natural attractions like the spectacular world heritage listed Kakadu National
Park, abundant wildlife, magnificent sunsets and the relaxed outdoor lifestyle
attract thousands of tourists each year.
