SHOPPING FACILITIES
Shopping facilities in Darwin are excellent. Major shopping centres are located in the heart of the city and at Casuarina Shopping Square in the northern suburbs. However, there are many smaller complexes and suburban shopping centres that also provide excellent service and facilities. The Darwin Mall provides a strong visual attraction and experience, especially through the storylines in the paving which gives a fascinating potted history of Darwin.

Markets have become a way of life in Darwin and a popular feature for both visitors and residents. The Thursday Sunset Markets at Mindil Beach have become quite famous during the 'Dry Season' and now also operate on Sunday afternoons during the drier months.

Saturdays at Parap, Sundays at Nightcliff and Rapid Creek are all fun. They feature an extraordinary array of wonderful foods and aromas and an ever increasing selection of arts and crafts. The market place is certainly where you get a wonderful sense of Darwin's multicultural makeup.

RECREATION
The Top End has a rugged landscape and many natural wonders for which it is becoming increasingly well known. Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Katherine Gorge are all within half a day's drive and are quite spectacular.

Most of the national parks are readily accessible, many to two-wheel-drive vehicles. Most Northern Territory national parks offer wonderful scenery, camping and picnic facilities and a special experience for all - especially hikers and backpackers. Photographers, birdwatchers and nature lovers are rarely disappointed and take home very special memories of the Top End.

Recreation in the Territory is often entwined with camping, bushwalking, the outdoors and an appreciation of the natural landscape. There is also a very genuine concern that the natural beauty of the area should be respected and protected.

Recreational fishing is another very popular pastime. Many locals have favourite spots for catching the elusive barramundi and love the thrill and challenge of catching a fighting marlin or other game fish.

The many parklands threaded through the suburbs and the city offer a whole range of venues for walking, family outings and community gatherings. The beaches are also popular avenues for these activities.

The Territory Wildlife Park at Berry Springs is another favourite with locals and visitors and is a world-class facility of which the locals are very proud. If you want to experience Territory Wildlife then give the Park a visit - you won't be disappointed.

The nightlife in Darwin provides something for most tastes, from five star hotels and restaurants to night clubs and discos. A good starting point for a night out is Mitchell Street.

The famous Beer Can Regatta and the Festival of Darwin, as well as the many cultural events provided by the ethnic community, all provide marvellous family entertainment and are enjoyed equally by locals and visitors. There really is 'something for everyone'.

SPORT IN THE TOP END
Sport is a way of life in the Top End and especially in Darwin. Territorians are avid sports fans and are renowned for their sporting prowess. The climate for 70 per cent of the year makes outdoor sports a pleasure. In a recent Australian Bureau of Statistics survey it was found that Territorians were involved in over 110 different sporting and physical activities.

The Northern Territory Institute of Sport (NTIS) opened in July 1996. The National Heat Training and Acclimatisation Centre now operates as part of the NTIS. Darwin also has numerous world class and national standard sporting facilities. On a per capita basis Darwin is said to have the best cluster of sporting facilities in Australia.
The Marrara Sporting Complex, just 11 km from the heart of the city, is the Territory's premier sporting venue and comparable with the best in the world. It features a variety of stadiums for all categories of football, a synthetic athletics track, two synthetic hockey fields and a range of other venues catering for more than 25 sports. It also has a BMX track and an excellent indoor air-conditioned multi-sport facility which is of international standard.

Cricket, basketball, beach volleyball, tennis, athletics, self defence sports, golf, swimming, athletics, shooting, hockey, touch football, baseball, horse racing, cycling, water sports and now even dragon boating are all popular in the Top End.

Darwin has also played host to many major national and international sporting events including the Arafura Games, AFL, International Test Cricket, and the Shell Championship series V8 Supercars.

CULTURE AND THE ARTS
Darwin's arts community is strong and vibrant and new residents are often surprised at the diverse range and quality of arts practice and facilities in Darwin. There are many opportunities to be involved in performing and visual arts, crafts, festivals, dance and music, or alternatively, to take it easy, sit back and be entertained.

The Darwin Entertainment Centre is the Top End's premier entertainment venue. Since opening its doors in 1986 the Playhouse Theatre (able to seat 1,000 patrons) has hosted many local, national and international acts, as well as providing convention and conference facilities. The more intimate Studio Theatre within the complex seats 278 in theatre mode, but using latest technology has the added capability of transforming into a flat floor cabaret venue with a sprung hardwood floor.

Brown's Mart Theatre is another popular venue and many performers take advantage of the perfect weather in the 'Dry season' to present outdoor productions in the Old Town Hall Ruins, the Botanic Gardens and the Amphitheatre. The Darwin Film Society's Deck Chair Cinema operates under the stars each Dry and provides a wonderful atmosphere.
