Prerequisite for English as a Second Language subjects
The English as a Second Language Courses are designed for students from
non-English speaking backgrounds. They provide opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and skills of English in a variety of modes (listening, reviewing, speaking, reading and writing). They also focus on the cultural and situational contexts of language and learning.
Eligibility
The SSABSA Application for Eligibility for Enrolment in English as a Second Language must be completed by:
all students who want to enrol in Stage 1 English as a Second Language;
students who want to enrol in a Stage 2 English as a Second Language subject and who did not enrol in Stage 1 ESL.
Students who are granted eligibility for Stage 1 English as a Second Language are automatically eligible for Stage 2 English as a Second Language subjects and need not reapply.
The application for eligibility requires students to provide a history of their schooling to determine the number of full-time years of schooling where the medium of instruction was English. Documentation may be required as evidence.
Students who have had more than a total of five years of full-time schooling where the language of instruction was English will have their English language proficiency assessed at the school where they are enrolled. The assessment will be made using the SSABSA Eligibility Criteria for Assessment of Restricted Language.
