Canteen Creek community has people from many different
indigenous groups. Most, however, are from the Alyawarra
nation. Whilst many adults remain fluent in Alyawarra many of
the children are not. Consequently the school community has
taken on learning to read Alyawarra. |

With some training from the local SIL linguist,
David Blackman, staff and students began reading simple
readers for the first time this year. Even the younger
students enjoyed seeing their language in print for the first
time. |

Many parents in our school are skilled painters. Their work is
stunning. Veronica Bonney let us use one of her paintings as a basis
for our school mosaic.
The students are adept at finding bush tucker. There is an
abundance of bush foods in the region. Students will snack on small
birds caught in the bush. They will also track down the yellow
goanna, Lochada.
In Spring bush beans and bush potatoes add a healthy balance to
meals. In summer sweet berries are sought along the flowing creeks.
Even native mistletoe provides a sweet fruit called snottygobbles -
which explains their consistency quite graphically!
