MY MEMORIES OF SCHOOL                              JUNE 2004

Name                 Tracy Camfoo

Dates:                I started at about 5 or 6 years old and finished at about 17 years old.  I went to work at the ANZ Bank here.

Subjects             We learned Maths, Science, English, Music, Sport. I liked English and Science but I hated Maths.

Teachers           They were all good teachers. They cared about us.

Culture              We learned about culture. Old people came to school. Old ladies showed us how to peel pandanus and make string bags, and told us stories.

Discipline          It was strict. I liked that. Boys were sent to the Principal and they would have to pick up rubbish. Today’s discipline is strict enough.

Friends              I had 4 friends – Lorraine, Mavis, Crystal Bulumbara, Carol Hood (Carol Jackson). We used to walk around together, go to the shop, go swimming. We talked about what we would do today or tomorrow, not about boyfriends.

Clothes              We had a uniform, red and white wraparound skirt and red shirt. If we wore ordinary clothes we had to go home. I think kids should wear uniforms today. Girls should wear dresses. After school we wore dresses – mum bought them.

Sports and games     There was Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer. I hated sport. I used to pretend I was sick. The boys soccer team was very good.

Excursions and Entertainment        Bali was a beautiful trip. We saw dancing, monkey forest, old volcano with a lake inside.

Pipi’s Storm Circus came. We had concerts.

Reflections          I didn’t worry about anything but probably my parents did. Now I worry about kids finding a job and about drugs and alcohol.

My advice to
young people       “Keep going to school. Follow your dreams.”
