MY MEMORIES OF SCHOOL                                 JUNE 2004

Name                 Geoffrey Walla
One of the teachers found a comic book under my desk. It was a Goofy comic and that’s how I got my nickname.

Dates:                Started at 1963. I went to Kormilda when I was 15 and worked as an adult educator for five years

Subjects             I learned Maths and English at night school starting at 6 pm.

I liked Culture, sports and fishing.

Culture              Old people taught culture. Old people were very strong. We were making a lot of things like Didg’s and art painting. They taught us everything so we could pass it on to our children.
Culture is very important for young kids. At night there was no grog. We used to do dancing, corroboree.

Discipline          Was hard, strict. We had to gho to bed at 8 o’clock, not walk around.

Language          We used English in school. After school we used Jawoyn first and Kriol.

Friends              I had a lot of friends. We all mixed together.

Clothes              We wore good clothes, large trousers (shorts). Older people wore coth rag, no shirt.

Sports and games     Basketball, soccer

Excursions and Entertainment        On weekends we would go hunting, get sugarbag, collect honey.

Reflections        I remember a sad time was when the school burnt down.

My advice to        I would like to see kids get involved in culture and become strong.
young people       Old people should get involved with school culture.
