The teaching and learning in these curriculum areas are supported
by targeted intervention programs and several specialist teaching
positions.
Learning Technology
With nearly 200 computers in the school, there is a strong focus
on Learning Technology. A specialist teacher proves weekly lessons
to all but our youngest students in a well-equipped computer lab.
Other staff are involved in regular professional development ensuring
a ‘cross over’ of skills into the classroom.
Special Education Teacher
The school follows the NT Board of Studies Special Education Policy
– Provision for Students with Disabilities and Impairments
in Northern Territory Schools in partnership with Student Services
and parents. This partnership involves a balance of rights and responsibilities
for all parties concerned ie. student, teacher, Student Services
personnel, Inclusion Support Assistants and parents.
Students with special needs are identified and assessed and will
receive assistance relative to the level of their need. Students
who require significant adjustments to the school and/or learning
environment may go through the process of an Individual Education
Plan (IEP).
In all cases our aim is to maximise the success of each individual
in our school community through a collaborative, inclusive approach.
A specialist teacher provides a program to meet this aim.
Primary Support
A daily 2 hour program supporting the literacy skill development
of 25 students. Students are identified through a whole school testing
program and work together in a cooperative and supportive environment
with the Assistant Principals, the Special Education teacher and
other Inclusion Support Assistants.
English as a Second Language
Bakewell Primary School has a growing number of ESL students from
a variety of ethnic backgrounds including Greek, Vietnamese, Thai,
Malay, Cook Islands, and Filipino, as well as students from indigenous
backgrounds.
These students are supported within their regular classroom setting
by the ESL teacher, as well as supported in small groups with reading,
writing and oral language.
Programs than run include guided reading and writing, and oral language
activities including grammar games, role playing, and barrier games.
Oral language is also encouraged in the classroom through think,
talk and do and reporting back strategies.
Social Skills
This weekly program provides students with strategies to develop
friendship groups, cooperative skills and anger management. The
students involved have the opportunity to learn in a happy, positive
group environment.
