History of Alawa Primary School

The Suburb

The suburb of Alawa was constructed in the late 1960s. It is named after an Aboriginal tribe who inhabited an area on the southern tributaries of the Roper River, centered around Hodgson Downs Station.

The street names in Alawa commemorate residents and workers at the old Post Office who were killed in the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese in 1942 and boats and people associated with the early settlement of Palmerston (Port Darwin).

Alawa School

Alawa school was constructed in 1969 ready for the 1970 school year intake in February. Alawa is a friendly, small, caring school which reflects our school community. The school provides an educational program to meet students’ needs from pre-school to year six. Challenging, developmental, and co-operative learning is the philosophy that is fundamental to all of our classes.

New Classroom Wings.

In 2005, a $2.4m innovative classroom wing was designed to reflect our vision. Classes successfully took possession in 2006.

In 2008 we have begun to plan a special purpose $2m Strong Beginnings wing and we hope classes will take up residence early in 2009.
